Disgusting and Sickening

Just a little while ago Fox News announced a programming change due to the President's press conference this evening. At the time I began writing this piece the notice that was posted on Facebook was just 25 minutes old. Here is just a sample of the nearly 1300 comments that occurred on the post.

    • Smooth talker, talks in circles! Will blame everyone else but himself! Thank you to all the people who put him in office! 2012 Can't get here fast enough. Hope Reps. don't put someone up to run that will hand it back over to obama because he is the lesser of the two evils. Wait I don't think anybody could be as bad as obama. If they do maybe some good will run on an independent ticket.

I have no problem with people not agreeing with other people, even our President. However, this discourse is terribly bothersome to me and is no doubt why our politicians can no longer work together to get anything done for us. And it will never change until these people that are willing to spout this hate and nonsense are put in check. If you just sit back and never say anything and don't get involved you can be assured you won't be represented when it comes time to pass legislation because there is an entire flock of people that aren't doing that. They are talking loudly and often. They desire no compromise and are more than willing to demonize everyone and everything that is not exactly like them. Just like with any team or any classroom or any work environment, we are only as good as our worst players. And even if you aren't like this, this is what you have become because these people have captained our ship and taken us in this direction. I find it very embarrassing and troubling and I will continue to speak out and attempt to expose this shallow way of thinking. I don't expect everyone to agree with me on everything but I find it hard to believe the people that follow my stuff wouldn't agree with this no matter what camp they find themselves in. We're all in this together and this is no way to deal with one another.

    It's A Boy

The tracker for the blog reached 1500 page views today. When I began the adventure of creating a blog I had set a mental goal of 100 views in a week, that would have been a success in my mind. So the fact that number was achieved and surpassed on day one was quite humbling. And the fact the blog is reaching the ripe old age of one month old in a couple of days and the number of views exceeds 1500 is even more humbling.

When I say humbling I don't want to give the wrong impression (something I am very talented at and actually take great pride in). It isn't humbling because I believe I am all that special and I have something that everyone needs to hear. It is humbling that I have achieved the feat of presenting a wide array of topics, often the kind people consider controversial and off limits, and have collected an audience of people that are willing to read, watch, comment and participate in during the adventure. Not the adventure of the blog, but more importantly the adventure of life.

Social networks are an amazing creation. Yet, still to this day we all know people that believe they are a passing fad or something they don't have enough time for. They are hardly a fad, they are a new way of life. They are popular for many worthy and noble reasons, not just the games and applications that try to entice membership. It says a lot about our species that we long to have contact and communication with one another, that we develop relationships that would be nearly impossible without these mediums. We are a social creature and we always have been. We rule this planet because of our ability to work together and achieve feats that aren't based on our strength, quickness, eyesight, size, hunting ability or a plethora of any other traits that we aren't the best at in the animal kingdom. We are social and that lead to great strides at an amazing clip when it came to learning. We learn from each other and learn from others that have lived before us.

We used to be able to find a neighborhood and settle in and close ourselves off from the rest of the world. We could surround ourselves by only like minded people and could harbor our views and never have them challenged. Times have changed. And this change can only make us better. Thousands of years ago when we were a small group and were isolated to one continent we didn't have as many differences as we do today. Now we occupy every corner of the globe and live life in a variety of ways. How it's lived in Los Angeles, California is different from how it's lived in Butte, Montana. But the one thing that is common is it is people living life. How we will be judged or viewed once we are long gone is hard to know but one thing we can be sure of is we are here now and we are fortunate to be on this ride. Whatever your view of how it all works happens to be it seems we should all be able to agree that life is a gift, remarkable, lucky, astonishing, and full of great potential for joy and happiness to be experienced. If one has no time to interact with others because their day or week or month is chalked full of busy work and tasks then I wonder about the quality of life they're living.

Evolution is, quite simply, the change over time of inherited traits found in populations. Our social tendencies are inherited traits. We certainly have the ability to pass on our behavioral tendencies. No doubt mutations are the major catalyst for any type of great deviation among organisms but not always the case. There are several mechanisms that take place in the process of evolution but the one with the most obvious impact is natural selection. The idea is very simple: the fittest survive.

We, because we live here on Earth, usually only think about evolution in terms of how it allows organisms to survive on this planet. I contend it is much more grand. If we are happy to limit ourselves to this rock and never thrive any place else then we can be rest assured our days are numbered. Besides the fact our lifeline, the sun, will eventually burn out, ending our solar system altogether, the chances of any number of other things causing our demise way before that date are much more likely. We even have the potential of creating our own demise and have built devices that could wipe out our entire species, not to mention every other species on the planet. And if we trust our scientists we even have the ability to cause enough damage to our planet to alter its conditions that would make life much more difficult to sustain.

If there is life out there in the universe then we can be certain with a 99.99% degree of probability there is intelligent life. If this intelligent life has lived for any substantial length of time, relatively speaking, then they have figured out how to not limit themselves to one rock or region. Those that didn't quite simply got eliminated by natural selection, they weren't fit to go on.

When we retreat to our comfort zones and shelter ourselves from any other views that don't align with our own we limit ourselves. We create conditions that make it hard for our species to live on past the numbered days of our current neighborhood. When we get caught up in the rat race and fail to reflect on what we are, what we're experiencing, what we have to pass on to future generations then we make it hard to move forward in the best ways possible. Regardless of how large this world seems it is smaller than any pebble of sand on the biggest beach on the planet. In fact, it's millions of times smaller than that in the grand scheme of things. And no matter how different it seems we all are from one another, we are not. We all are the same creature and share the same desire to live life.

When we create imaginary lines and boundaries and label regions and look at the differences in one another we no longer focus on the most important characteristic we all share, humans living life. When we find ways to become connected and share ideas and have a genuine desire to take in and absorb the ideas of others then we make this journey much easier. And not just easier in the here and now, but easier on the future generations as well. And we create the possibility of generations living in other places besides this small little rock we call our home in a tiny little neighborhood. When we get caught up in just taking care of our immediate needs and desires we lose focus on some of the more important issues. Looking into treating our planet better becomes a debate and we talk about the "cost" of doing it, insane. When we focus on ourselves we no longer place a priority on funding space exploration and divert our money and resources into more immediate and temporary fixes. When we view things from our self serving agendas long term thinking extends in terms of our lifespans and days and weeks and months and years seem more relevant than millennium. How we are going to pay for something right now, this year, this week becomes far more important than how we are going to fund something that won't benefit us anytime soon.

We often look at tasks or problems or fixes and feel overwhelmed by the implementation of their solutions. However, most things are accomplished taking one step at a time. Something as simple as wanting to read the views of others, whether or not you agree with them, is a step in the right direction. There are so many things, in fact, the vast majority of everything, that are beyond our control. So when we have a chance to actually guide the course it would seem we should take full advantage of this opportunity and embrace it. It doesn't even have to be hard and can even be fun. Something as simple as being connected to your other fellow humans.

When we look back on our short history and identify major marks that changed our course we can find them. If our own species lives on millions of generations into the future and occupies other neighborhoods in our universe they will certainly be able to look back at their ancestors and do the same. The creation of the internet will be one of those moments where our course was altered if we do live on. It is a tool. It's a tool that allows us to come together, to learn at exponentially faster rates than people did just a few short years ago. It also allows us to enjoy our existence in the here and now, we can share our days, our thoughts, our families, our entire lives with one another. We can help and lift each other. We can teach one another and open minds. The potential is limitless and the benefits range well beyond life in this neighborhood. And if our future generations try to put all the pieces together and figure out how it is we evolved and became fit to survive this planet and go beyond they will undeniably look at the time when we figured out how to unite and become one creature, a whole.

This is why I am humbled by those of you that go out of your way to read this blog and see what I'm up to. My ego isn't who I am. I am you. When I challenge you I am challenging me. And that you want to learn more about you by keeping tabs on me is the most humbling thing of all.

    Don't Call Me Sir

I'm always amazed when I come across something unfamiliar to me that millions of other people are already aware of and have been for years. Kind of like Mumford and Sons, healthy eating, or the double-slit experiment. Anyway, today I happened to learn of Sir Terence David John Terry Pratchett.

Pratchett, who goes by Terry, or Sir, was the number one selling author in the UK during the 90's. He is currently the second most-read author in the UK (totally guessing number one might be JK Rowling but I didn't have the energy to look it up after reading over 700 Pratchett quotes). Pratchett is the seventh most-read non U.S. author in the U.S. and I had never heard of him. He writes fantasy books (those people in the UK dig that sorcery stuff) and is pretty damn funny. I truly believe I could reply to every post on Facebook using a Pratchett quote, he echoes my sentiments on so many subjects. He has dethroned Jack Handy on my list of comedic favorites when it comes to making me laugh in just a few lines and he brings such depth to the table.

Below I have provided some of my favorite quotes from Pratchett, most of them were taken from many of the books he has authored...

"Stories of imagination tend to upset those without one."

"In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded."

"I'll be more enthusiastic about encouraging thinking outside the box when there's evidence of any thinking going on inside it."

"No! Please! I'll tell you whatever you want to know!" the man yelled.
"Really?" said Vimes. "What's the orbital velocity of the moon?"
    "What?"
    "Oh, you'd like something simpler?"

"God does not play dice with the universe; He plays an ineffable game of His own devising, which might be compared, from the perspective of any of the other players [i.e. everybody], to being involved in an obscure and complex variant of poker in a pitch-dark room, with blank cards, for infinite stakes, with a Dealer who won't tell you the rules, and who smiles all the time."

"There is a rumour going around that I have found God. I think this is unlikely because I have enough difficulty finding my keys, and there is empirical evidence that they exist."

"I'd rather be a rising ape than a falling angel."

"The whole of life is just like watching a film. Only it's as though you always get in ten minutes after the big picture has started, and no-one will tell you the plot, so you have to work it out all yourself from the clues."

And The Hits Just Keep On Coming

David Brooks is at it again, this time he's naming names. Let's look at his credentials as a Republican before we call him a RINO: editor of The Wall Street Journal, senior editor at The Weekly Standard, contributing editor to Newsweek and commentator on NPR.

The Beltway Bandits - Grover Norquist of Americans for Tax Reform has been instrumental in every recent GOP setback. He enforces rigid ultimatums that make governance, or even thinking, impossible.

The Big Government Blowhards - To keep audience share, they (talk-radio jocks) need to portray politics as a cataclysmic, Manichaean struggle. A series of compromise that steadily advance conservative aims would muddy their story lines and be death to their ratings.

The Show Horses - Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann produce Tweets, not laws. They have created a climate in which purity is prized over practicality.

The Permanent Campaigners - They believe that if they can remain pure in their faith then someday their party will win a total and permanent victory over its foes. They believe they are Gods of the New Dawn.

Fortunately, there are still practical conservatives in the GOP, who believe in results, who believe in intelligent compromise. If people someday decide the events of the past weeks have been a debacle, then practical conservatives may regain control.

Here is my piece written in June about the situation the GOP finds itself in because of the fringe that has hijacked the party, http://jasonhedrick.blogspot.com/2011/06/i-can-see-clearly-now.html

    Hi, I'm White Lady

This piece was authored by my friend, Major Rogers

There is a dove that has nested in our empty hanging bird feeder. She sits in her nest, day and night, and though she must, I have never seen her leave. She coo’s in the morning, and then is silent the rest of the day, until the cool breeze of evening strikes her song again. Her nest only hangs inches from my head level, and I am careful not to disturb her. I was even apprehensive about mowing the back yard, passing right by her with the roaring beast; anticipating the bleating sound of her wings at any moment during my passing, but she stood her ground.

I have developed a deep appreciation for this gentle creature. She is full of an indefinable grace, and an admirable prowess of duty. Call it instinct, call it nature, it still represents a beating heart married to determination, and it is admirable.

I feel a shame that I once found a pleasure in blasting these birds from the sky. I didn’t like the meat, and I am haunted by the memory of a few birds that the shot didn’t kill, only fell them. I remember dealing with them, and the minds pictures that still hold fresh today. I never enjoyed that part of hunting.

I even plucked a few from the telephone wires in my childhood suburban neighborhood, with the use of a bb gun. I assume as a kid, the power over another creature gave the motivation or the feeling of control in my own life. But I don’t understand the thought anymore.

The whole ordeal had me thinking about the treatment of animals overall. I had always avoided The Jungle, Sinclair’s groundbreaking proletarian novel that brought attention the slaughter houses of America, and the treatment of the beasts who suffered the experiences. However, one day while in an airport bookstore I bravely picked up a copy, and turned to a random page. It was a descriptor of a pigs being slaughtered. It had the most profound line written, that has stuck with me about the treatment of animals. “There was no one to take the terrified pig by the arm, and explain the need for his sacrifice.” We don’t give much thought, we just slaughter, day in, and day out. Thank god we have men willing to do this blood work for us. People able to lock eyes with another creature who is suffering the highest amounts of fear, and drop a hammer—hoping for a swift kill, not for the animals sake, but to keep the work easier.

We cast the thought of animal treatment off and say that’s what animals are for. They are for slaughter for food, clothing, vanity, or entertainment. All the while, a creature with thought patterns, and the ability to develop a relationship with a human, is thanklessly lead to its demise. Maybe all families should pray before meals? This would depict a basic humility of acknowledging your food suffered to an extent to be on your table. The bushman and aborigines all over the globe partake in the action of thanking their prey, acknowledging that they appreciate the animal giving its life, to sustain the life of the hunter. Of course these are “primitive” people.

We are given the gift of domestication, and give very little thought to the thousands of domesticated animals that are destroyed daily. Dogs, cats, willing participants of love and loyalty - unconditional friends. Yet the genocide goes on, day in and day out, and too little is done about it. How quick would action take place if citizens had to spend a day executing kittens and white faced dogs once a year?

There is breaking research out that studies the thought patterns and behaviors of animals. I realize there is a large consensus of people who want to remove themselves from their place in nature, and place themselves in a separate class, away from the animal kingdom. For these people, it must be frightening to see the comparison of ape behavior and human child development. Parrots, thought once to be simply capable of mimicking words, have now been proven to understand those words—but it’s just a bird? We know animals like the dolphin, whale, and even the lowly pig, are incredibly intelligent, capable and in some cases longing to interact with us on some levels. But it’s easier to just consider them “animals” and allow the slaughter to go unchecked.

One way I keep myself from going over the edge with depression over the subject of animal treatment is to realize there are ways to strike a balance. Animals in most senses are programmed alike, and that is to survive. A cow can have a good life, however long that may be, by simply being provided for. Well fed, well watered, and aptly sheltered from the elements is a fair tradeoff for the beast’s life. A gentle process to slaughter, with swift and accurate equipment, and the cycle works in both man and animals favor.

I don’t want my friends who hunt, to stop hunting, that’s not what I’m promoting here. It’s just not for me. The grocer’s meat aisle is full enough that I don’t feel the need to be the one who stalks fear, pain, and death in another creature, like a quasi coward, I will pay for this service to be done by others.

I guess I’m just not a fan of suffering, on any level. Watching a spider panicking before being squashed, or the sight of a malnourished dog, running along a dry hot freeway, hit me in uncomfortable ways. The thought of how we treat the Earth's creatures, as though we have every right to use and abuse them sometimes makes me think we as humans deserve any atrocity thrust upon us by God or Nature.  A dog lays on a concrete bed somewhere tonight, and though she is capable of providing unconditional love, loyalty, and companionship, will be pulled from her cage, and coldly put down tomorrow, stuck in a room watching others go before her—they do understand what is happening, just like they understand and panic a visit to the vet. These are the thoughts that keep me up at night, as I rub the ears of my own dog, and hear the soft song of a beautiful bird, outside my window.

    Debt Ceiling 101

If you don't know what the debt ceiling is then you're probably like most people. If you don't know what the debt ceiling is and think the way to address our current debt is spend less next year you're probably a Republican.

One of my friends provided an analogy for me illustrating how he understands the debt ceiling...
My wife likes to buy a lot of shoes. She spends a ton of money each year on shoes. I told her we don't have the money and she can no longer go shopping for shoes until we can afford it.

That is a wonderful plan to address his particular debt problem in the future, however it doesn't address the tab from the previous year. There are really only two solutions to this problem: skip out on the bill or pay the tab. What he and his family spend next year has nothing to do with the bill from last year.

Here is a brief history of when our nation accrued the largest debt according to Wikipedia...

The United States has had public debt since its inception. Debts incurred during the American Revolutionary War and under the Articles of Confederation led to the first yearly reported value of $75,463,476.52 on January 1, 1791. From 1796 to 1811 there were 14 surpluses and only 2 deficits. The first dramatic growth spurt of the debt occurred because of the War of 1812. In the first 20 years following the War of 1812, 18 surpluses were experienced and the US paid off 99.97% of its debt.
The second dramatic growth spurt of the debt occurred because of the Civil War. The debt was just $65 million in 1860, but passed $1 billion in 1863 and had reached $2.7 billion following the war. In the following 47 years America returned to the practice of running surpluses during times of peace experiencing 36 surpluses and only 11 deficits. During this period 55% of the US national debt was paid off.
The next period of major growth in debt came during WWI reaching $25.5 billion at its conclusion. It was followed by 11 straight surpluses and saw the debt reduced by 36%.
Social programs enacted during the Great Depression and the buildup and involvement in World War II during the F.D. Roosevelt and Truman presidencies in the 1930s and '40s caused the largest increase - a sixteenfold increase in thegross public debt from $16 billion in 1930 to $260 billion in 1950. When Roosevelt took office in 1933, the national debt was almost $20 billion; a sum equal to 20 percent of the U.S. gross domestic product (GDP). During its first term, the Roosevelt administration ran large annual deficits between 2 and 5 percent of GDP. By 1936, the national debt had increased to $33.7 billion or approximately 40 percent of GDP.
After this period, the growth of the gross public debt closely matched the rate of inflation where it tripled in size from $260 billion in 1950 to around $909 billion in 1980. Gross debt in nominal dollars quadrupled during the Reagan and Bush presidencies from 1980 to 1992. The net public debt quintupled in nominal terms.
In nominal dollars the net public debt rose and then fell between 1992 and 2000 from $3T in 1992 to $3.4T in 2000. During the administration of President George W. Bush, the gross public debt increased from $5.7 trillion in January 2001 to $10.7 trillion by December 2008. Under President Barack Obama, the debt increased from $10.7 trillion to $14.2 trillion by February 2011
Let's review this section and focus on some of the highlights...

"The United States has had public debt since its inception."
"The first dramatic growth spurt of debt occurred because of the War of 1812."
"The second dramatic growth spurt of the debt occurred because of the Civil War."
"In the following 47 years America returned to the practice of running surpluses during times of peace..."
"The next period of major growth in debt came during WWI."
"...the Great Depression and the buildup to WWII...caused the largest increase..."

Is it possible that our involvement in TWO wars, that have lasted nearly a decade each, have had any effect on our current debt?

What if I came to you and your wife (who loves shoes) and said, "Hey, let's pay your tab from your wasteful spending and try not to let this happen again. Next year I think you should spend 87% of your energy cutting from your unnecessary spending habits and focus 13% of your energy on bringing in more money. Does that sound reasonable?"

To which you reply, "No, I don't want to generate more revenue. By me not bringing in more revenue it creates jobs."
    all employess private industry
It's amazing we are so ignorant that we can't even understand pictures anymore. For an entire decade we shrunk our job creation levels to ZERO. And now we are told the solution is more of the same. It's borderline insanity.

    Hypocrisy

In 2002 when George W. Bush was President the debt ceiling was raised $450 billion. Guess who voted "yea" on this issue? If you answered Mitch McConnell, John Boehner, and Eric Cantor you are correct.

In 2003 Congress again voted to raise the debt ceiling by $900 billion. Guess who voted "yea" on this issue? That's right, McConnell, Boehner and Cantor.

In 2004 Congress raised the debt ceiling again, this time by $800 billion.  Guess who voted "yea" on this issue? Let me give you a clue ... Mitch McConnell, John Boehner and Eric Cantor.

In 2006 these three guys did it again, raising the debt ceiling by $781 billion.

In 2007 all three of them agreed to do it again, raising the debt ceiling by $850 billion.

Since 1962 the debt ceiling has been raised 74 times. While George W. Bush was President it was raised 7 times.

Hypocrisy - The state of pretending to have feelings, beliefs, virtues, opinions, qualities and standards that one does not actually have.
Nothing is more unjust, however common, than to charge with hypocrisy him that expresses zeal for those virtues which he neglects to practice; since he may be sincerely convinced of the advantages of conquering his passions, without having yet obtained the victory, as a man may be confident of the advantages of a voyage, or a journey, without having courage or industry to undertake it, and may honestly recommend to others, those attempts which he neglects himself. ~ Samuel Johnson

    Midterm Mandate

President Obama released his fundraising information and he broke his own record by bringing in $86 million dollars. The amount of money is impressive, it totals more than all of the money raised by the entire Republican field running against him combined. However, there are a few more things that jump out at me that should get the attention of the Republicans that are resting on their midterm laurels.

None of the money was donated by a PAC or a lobbyist. None of the GOP candidates have released their fundraising information to date but I doubt any one of them will be able to make the same claim.

Another interesting stat to consider is the fact that 98% of all donations were under $250 and the average donation is $88. Again, I doubt this will be the case for ANY of the Republicans.

And with the dire straights of our economy looming over the next election, Obama managed to round up 260,000 first time donors.

Spin it however you will but this doesn't seem good news for the Republican Party in 2012.

I Do It All For You

When I began my blog the site informed me it would place ads that seemed content appropriate. The site was free and that seemed completely fair. The process works by scrawling my blog for words and content and tries to place advertisements that might catch the attention of the people viewing my blog. It seems the program has decided I'm "fair and balanced" and has placed an equal amount of left and right leaning ads. That seems pretty cool to me. But I not just about politics, I'm much more than that.
